As overwhelmed as many people are with all the choices when they are turning 65, leaving a group plan after 65 can also give people an unnecessary headache. The bottom line is this: whether you are 68 or 78 when you choose to leave your group plan and sign up for Medicare, you enter a Special Enrollment Period which is an 8 month window that starts the month after employment ends or coverage ends, whichever happens first to sign up for Medicare Part A and or Part B without a penalty.
There are two forms that you need to fill out. The first form is the Part B enrollment form which is just a half page of basic information. The second form is called Request for Employment Information which needs to be signed by your employer. We will guide you through this important transition and also make sure that you sign up for the most competitive supplement and appropriate drug plan.
